I've been thinking about how to summarize myself, and then I took the Dating Persona Test and the result was "The Boy Next Door." Wow, that was kind of dead-on:
"On paper, most girls would name the Boy Next Door as their ideal mate. In the real world, however, you’re often passed over for more dangerous or masculine men. You’re the typical “nice guy:” without just a touch of cockiness, you’re doomed with girls. A shoulder to cry on? Okay, sure. But never a penis to hold."
Yeah, that sounds about right. I'm always the "good friend." Hell, I'm kind of like the gay male friend that every woman wants, except I'm hetero. I listen to her problems, I help her rate the guys, choose between the hot firemen/soldiers/lifeguards, and I'm there when the bad boy dumps her. Then she turns to me - I really hate this part, by the way - and says, "Why can't I find a nice guy like you?" Umm, hello, the last time I checked, I'm a guy like me! I'm sitting right here! Open your eyes, look in front of you, and you'll find a guy like me!
I've tried to be the bad boy, I really have. I even have a leather jacket. But it just doesn't work. I just can't bring myself to treat a woman like crap. The nice guy in me keeps coming through. I'll always hold the door for a woman or let her in the elevator before me, not because I want to get in her panties, but because that's how I was raised and it's the right thing to do. At this time in my life, the bad boy thing isn't something I really want to be anyway. I think that women my age have outgrown the bad boy and want a nice guy, and I'm not interested in younger women. But I'm keeping the leather jacket. It's comfortable.
I can't talk about myself without talking about my children, because they are an integral part of my life. I was a stay-at-home Dad for the first 10 years or so (working at night and taking care of the kids during the day), and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. I am very close to my children, and they will always come first. They are older now (both in college) and don't require my undivided attention anymore, but when they call, I will drop everything for them. Anyone who wants to be with me will have to understand that.
Oh, and sports. I'm a typical guy, and I love sports. I know most guys on here will probably say the opposite just to get what they want from you, but I also believe in being honest. I'm a huge sports fan, so be prepared for me to spend my Sunday afternoons in front of the TV. It would be nice to have some company, and I promise we'll go do something you like in return. I would list my favorite sports in the following order:
1. Football - Huge Bears fan, I'll watch any football game that's on, and I'm in several fantasy football leagues. If you're a Packer fan, I'm sorry, but we won't get along. The fact that you're a Packer fan is already making me question your mental stability.
2. Baseball - Yes, I'm a Cub fan, and before you start laughing, think about this: Cub fans are eternal optimists. We have been dumped on and disappointed our entire lives, but we keep coming back year after year. We hold out hope that one day we will be rewarded for all the pain and suffering. That's why I'm here on this site, too.
3. Hockey - What else can I say but Go Blackhawks! I am so happy and so proud of these kids. The Stanley Cup drought in Chicago is over, and we're going to be a force for many years to come. It's fun to watch hockey again, and I'm not upset about all the bandwagon fans who recently showed up. Plenty of room for all!
4. NASCAR - My son got me into watching the races back in the 1990s, and we've been to two races in person so far. We went to the Chicagoland race in 2010, because I won tickets in the Sun-Times fantasy contest. He has his favorite driver and I have a different favorite, so it's fun to talk some smack while we watch races. (This is the only sport where we don't have the same favorite.)
I have always been interested in astronomy (no, that does not mean, "What's your sign?") and space. I am watching something on the Science Channel about space all the time, my screen name signifies both the death of a star and the birth of new ones, and my dream job when I was a kid was to work for NASA. OK, that's not exactly correct. I grew up in the middle of the Space Race, and when I was in first grade we had just had the moon landing and Apollo 13. (Yes, Apollo 13 was real, not just a movie with Tom Hanks, although the movie was very good.) All the boys wanted to be either policemen, firemen (those guys obviously got the girls that wanted me to be their "good friend"), or astronauts. I stood up and proudly stated that I wanted to be "Houston." Yes, me, the ultimate nerd, Houston. Those geniuses who figured out how to get those guys home in a crippled spaceship were my heroes then and still are today.
I work downtown and live on the North Side. I would be interested in meeting for a drink after work or taking a walk by the lake, pretty much anything to do with Chicago. I love this town, and I can't imagine ever living anywhere else. I draw strength from the city; I feel the electricity in the air and it gives me life. If you know what I'm talking about and are shaking your head in agreement, then we definitely need to talk.
The book of my life is nowhere near complete, and I'm ready to start writing the next chapter. My marriage lasted over 20 years and was abusive and dysfunctional for most of that time. I'm interested in seeing what would happen if I met someone who encourages me instead of tearing me down to make herself look better.
I had a life changing experience in December of 2009. I had a heart attack. Everyone, pick up the phone, call your doctor, and make an appointment to have your cholesterol checked! :-) I am adopted and have no family medical history, so I had no clue about the ticking time bomb in my chest. I always took my good health for granted. Not anymore. I had a week in the hospital to think, and I realized that life is too short to be unhappy. That's when I decided that I could not put off my divorce. I was always waiting for the next thing: wait until both kids were out of the house, wait until the house was more stable, wait until I could financially afford to have separate households.
Then I said, what am I waiting for? I need to do this for my own health, because the constant stress and tension was part of the reason for my heart attack. Yeah, the junk clogging two of my arteries was a bigger reason, but you get my point. So today my focus is on my health. I quit smoking (this time for good), I'm getting more exercise, and I'm moving on with my life. BTW, I'm fine now, so don't worry about me dying on you, lol! My plan is to go down in history as the last surviving "baby boomer," because I was born in the last year of that generation (1964). I'm here for a long time.
What kind of person are you interested in meeting?
If you've had enough of the bad boys dumping on you, you've realized that the hot fireman/soldier/lifeguard is all looks and no substance, and you're ready to appreciate what a "nice guy" can do for you. If you're in Chicago and around my age, we should talk.
Sorry, but I don't really want to meet any young girls because we have nothing in common. Yes, you 20-somethings are very pretty and you have great bodies, but I'm looking for more substance. No offense. I'm sure there are some tall, buff lifeguards looking for you right now.
I don't want to meet anyone who isn't local or at least planning to come to Chicago sometime. This is my town, I'm not going anywhere. If, however, you are not in Chicago and you just want to chat online and exchange emails and be friends, that would be great! One can never have too many friends.
I have a few "requirements," but not too many. You must like children and animals. I feel that a maternal instinct is very attractive. Even if you don't have kids, that nurturing aspect is very important to me. You should take pride in your appearance and your surroundings. I'm not looking for a supermodel, but running a brush through your hair once a day and putting on some clean clothes isn't too much to ask, is it? And I absolutely cannot stand a really dirty house. I lived a long time with someone who never cleaned up after herself, and I will not be involved with someone like that again. It doesn't have to be spotless and a reasonable amount of clutter is always acceptable, but if it's going to attract bugs, it won't attract me.
As I said earlier, I am a big sports nut. I played football and baseball when I was younger, and I still like to go golfing. (I'm terrible, but it's really good exercise in the fresh air.) If you think that football is "a bunch of sweaty guys fighting over a ball," then you obviously don't get it, and that means you don't get me either.
Physical appearance is not as important as who you are inside. Looks fade over time, but a woman who is beautiful inside will always be that way. When we're really old and sitting in rocking chairs on the porch, it would be nice if we can get along and have something to talk about outside the bedroom, wouldn't it? Think about that when you're drooling over the hot fireman. When he's old and wrinkled what will he be good for?
Most importantly, you must be a non-smoker. I quit smoking and I just can't be around it. Not that I'm an in-your-face ex-smoker, it's just a trigger and makes me want to smoke again. If you're "trying to quit," good for you! Let me know when you have.
What sort of relationship would you like at this point in your life.
I've had a long marriage that lasted over 20 years. The whole time I was beaten down, verbally and physically abused, and made to feel that nobody else would ever want me. I want the exact opposite of that. I want someone who will be my partner, who will encourage me and cheer me on, and who will love me for who I am and not for how she can use me.
Name some of your all-time favorite music / movies / TV / books.
OK, I know that I'm not typical, because I really don't read a lot. I just don't have the patience to read a lot of books. Actually, I would much rather write (as you can tell by the book I'm writing for this profile).
Movies, I have some favorites, but I'm pretty flexible. I like action/adventure, drama, comedies, science fiction, the classics, I'll even suffer through a romantic comedy if I really like you.
Music, wow. I have a very large variety of musical tastes. I go from classical to classic rock, and pretty much everything in between. Jazz, blues, heavy metal, monster ballads, even a little country now and then. Just no rap. Sorry, but screaming obscenities with an electronic drum machine in the background isn't my idea of music.
Food. Is gravy a food? OK, I'll take that. Seriously, since I'm on the "heart healthy" diet now, I can't eat all my favorites anymore, but I still treat myself now and then. I like to cook, and I think it's a lot of fun to cook together, then enjoy a bottle of wine under some candlelight while we sample what we created.
We didn't mention TV yet, did we? I usually have the TV on, but mostly for background noise. It's on a music, news, or sports channel while I'm doing something else. But I have a few "must see" shows that I like, and surprisingly, they're all on Fox! House, Bones, Glee, and 24 (moment of silence for the end of Jack Bauer's adventures).
What type of work do you do? Do you enjoy it?
I am a professional nerd. I'm in the IT field. Do I enjoy it? Yeah, I guess so. It's a job. In this economy, I can't complain for having a decent job that pays the bills without having a college degree. No, I have no degree, but I am planning on finishing it in the near future. I'm just a few credits from an Associate's.
What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I like to just go out and have fun doing whatever. As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy many different sports. I also like doing cultural activities, like museums and theater. Just hanging out and watching a movie cuddling on the couch is a great way to spend an evening, or going for a walk by the lake or looking at Chicago's incredible architecture. I'm not picky, as long as we're together and enjoying each other's company.
What do you hate doing?
What I really hate doing is wasting my life sitting around doing nothing, or doing something alone.
Tell about where you grew up or where you are from.
I grew up in downstate Illinois. It was the typical Midwestern small town. About 40,000 people, about 100 miles from Chicago, St. Louis, or Indianapolis. So I could enjoy the small town atmosphere, but a city was only a couple of hours away. Unfortunately, it was only a nice place to grow up, but not a good place to be a grownup. When I turned 18, I had to get out of there if I wanted a job.
